Animal of the Week for August 7 - 27, 2011 is the Elephant. The African Elephant (pictured) is a threatened species, and the Asian Elephant is endangered. In 1979 it was estimated by conservationists that there were 1.3 million African elephants, but by 1989 hunting of elephants for ivory reduced their numbers to an estimated 600,000. Hopefully the next wildlife survey will find an increase in the elephant population, and a very long stay in jail should be the punishment for anyone caught killing elephants and other threatened and endangered animals. (Source of population estimates: Wildlife Conservation Society, "Africa Program," undated [1994-97], p. 16-17). In an August 2001 report, the population estimate of the African Elephant was again described as "numbering perhaps 600,000" by The New York Times (8/28/2001:F2); the Forest Elephants subspecies are estimated to be 250,000 of those, and the Savanna Elephants subspecies about 350,000 of those.
What is the relation of endangered animals to getting good grades?
A-Star Research Inc., publisher and distributor of Get Good Grades In College Now, is a company of environmentally friendly people, who have a deep commitment to improving this world socially (by helping college students get good grades), and environmentally (by raising awareness of endangered animals).
In addition to protecting endangered animals, three other very important environmental concerns are recycling, the need to protect forests, and global climate change.
